Summer Recharge

I love summer time because it is a time when I can finally read. I mean I read during the school year, but not like I do in the summer. Summer reading is a time for me to get into good juicy books. My recent obsession came about because of the movies "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo". The main characters were so engaging, that once I saw the first movie then I saw the second. I had to read the third book to know what happens next and how so many story lines would be resolved.

Today so many kids books are made into movies, I can only hope that these movies motivate children to read as though it has me. I as a teacher need to remove my bias of thinking that students shouldn't read books that are also movies because they know what happens in the story. Gratefully, "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" has reminded me that their is much more to a story then what happens in it. A book details the life of a character much more completely and the setting is so much clearer. Thanks to the break from the school year, summer reading has reminded me that no movie can beat how enriching it is to read!

Training

I took a golf lesson today. I've golfed maybe 4 times in my life, so when my father-in-law offered I take his spot at a lesson, I jumped at it. I knew that if I were to continue to play I wanted to learn how to play correctly rather then having to re-learn. If only learning were so easy.
This reminds me of what I'm doing with my reading group. The students are uber shy so I decided to use some prompts to help them talk about their reading. The prompts also provoke a comment about the book using a reading strategy. (If you'd like to use these prompts click here.) What I realized today while hitting golf tees (yes, I'm not ready for balls yet), was that having my students practice with these prompts is good practice. It's going to help them be better readers. They will know these prompts by heart and they will use them naturally in conversation.
I can only hope for their sake they use these natural prompts much sooner then my golf swing feels natural.

Inertia

So often I have said to my students, "I know how intimidating a blank page is, writing is really challenging - that's why hollywood writers get paid so much ;-)." So here I am looking at this blank blog. I've had my sight set on blogging for a year now, and today I'm feeling fierce enough to write. Great so, am I finished?

Not so fast...huh? Oh how about a disclaimer?! I thought it was really important that I set a true purpose for my blog. I'm not totally satisfied with my statement above about what this page is about; however, I do know that I am an ever evolving person...so why can't my blog be such. So if you chose to follow this page, which will likely only be my mom. Be prepared for random thoughts, spelling errors, grammatical errors, and pictures of my dog, Ozzie.

My first entries will likely focus my attention on a reading group I started during lunch time with a group of 5th grade girls who were just two years ago little 3rd graders in my bilingual class. I've named the group "Club de Leer" (I know extremely creative). I formed the group after a father of one of the girls requested for the second time his daughter be placed in a bilingual class. I admire his tenacity to maintain his daughter's Spanish language proficiency, but because it is the middle of the year a move to another classroom was not an option. So I offered to meet with her and some other girls to provide them with an opportunity to read in Spanish and have a peer group. I have met with them 3 times now....My first meeting we chose a book. I offered them two books: Hay que Salvar a Sole! - an amazing story of a Chilean girl who moves to the Dominican Republic and becomes passionate about saving an animal. The other book Papelucho a diary of the Dennis the Menace of Chile. I mean he's always getting in trouble. I for sure thought they would chose the book about the girl...but no. They chose Papelucho of course the girls alway go for the troublemaker. :-)
